It’s been a tradition for a good number of years to play the tune “Music for a Found Harmonium” as our last big tune, at the end of the student concert on Friday. It goes by pretty quickly, and if you just bump into it on Friday night, it can be daunting.
You can see a version of it done at the Carp Camp at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, KS with Dave Firestine leading. Go to about 2:05, and you’ll see Dave on the far right of the screen (the bearded guy), yelling for “Harmonium!” at about 2:10. We won’t play it this fast.
There’s way too much info available about “Harmonium” and the original performers, the Penguin Café Orchestra (note that their version is in C and thus illegal in Colorado), on YouTube and Wikipedia, so we won’t blather here about it. You might also recognize it if you saw the movie “Napoleon Dynamite.”
If you can’t get all the notes, don’t worry; get every 4th note, or play the chords. And if you’re playing chords, we’ll have someone stand up with a stick and point to the chords on a white board. We’ll all hopefully be in the key of D. Have a look at the music for the following instruments.
